Set of Eight Gien “Rambouillet” Hunting Dinner Plates

A striking set of eight hand-painted faience dinner plates from the renowned Gien manufactory, part of the celebrated “Rambouillet” series designed by Jean Bertholle (1909–1996). Each plate depicts a different game scene rendered in vivid naturalistic detail, including hares, pheasants, snipe, partridge, and ducks set against a woodland background. The palette features rich autumnal browns, greens, golds, and subtle highlights, reflecting the traditional hunting motifs for which the series is known.

On the reverse, each plate carries the Gien castle mark with the inscription décoré à la main (“decorated by hand”), underscoring the artisanal craftsmanship of this line. Two platess bear the GIEN castle logo mark – there are two different artist monograms—“DJ” and “LG”—indicating the individual decorators at the Gien workshop responsible for painting those examples. The signatures reflect the manufactory’s tradition of acknowledging its skilled decorators.

The Rambouillet service was originally commissioned in 1955 by French President René Coty for use at the presidential hunting lodge in the Château de Rambouillet, and it has since become one of Gien’s most iconic and collectible patterns. Production continued through the second half of the 20th century, and the present set dates to sometime between 1960 and 1971 when this mark was used.

All eight plates are in excellent condition, with bright colors and no chips, cracks, or repairs. A fine opportunity to acquire a substantial group of this prestigious and highly sought-after Gien pattern.
