Gien “Rambouillet” Faience Serving Platter French Hunting Hound
Gien “Rambouillet” Faience Serving Platter – Hunting Hound, France,1960s–1970s
A hand-painted serving platter from Gien’s prestigious “Rambouillet” service, designed in the 1950s by Jean Bertholle for the presidential hunting lodge at Château de Rambouillet. This scalloped-rim platter features the head of a hunting hound (Black and white French Basset, Poitevin Hound or Other hunting dog), surrounded by equestrian and hunting accoutrements — riding hat, stirrups, hunting horn, whip, and sword — all set against a finely cross-hatched woodland ground with autumn foliage. The strong, naturalistic rendering of the hound’s face underscores the artistry and detail that has made the Rambouillet series Gien’s most iconic and collectible pattern.
On the reverse, the platter carries the tall castle mark with décoré à la main ( c.1960–1971), together with a decorator’s monogram.
Mark: Gien France, décoré à la main, with decorator’s initials
