“Rambouillet” Concave Serving Platter – Hunting Horn and Rifle circa 1960
Gien “Rambouillet” Concave Serving Platter – Hunting Horn and Rifle
A large hand-painted concave serving platter (plat creux) from Gien’s prestigious “Rambouillet” service, designed by Jean Bertholle in the 1950s for the presidential hunting lodge at Château de Rambouillet. The platter features a richly detailed hunting still life of rifle, powder horn, whip, and hunting horn, set against the service’s signature cross-hatched woodland ground with scattered autumn leaves.
The form is slightly creuse (concave), giving the piece more depth than a flat serving dish while remaining broad enough to function as a presentation platter. This unusual format combines decorative presence with practical utility, making it one of the more distinctive serving pieces in the Rambouillet line.
On the reverse, the platter carries the Gien castle mark with décoré à la main (used c.1960–1971), together with decorator’s initials.
Dimensions: approx. 34.5 cm (13.5 in.) diameter
Mark: Gien France, décoré à la main, with decorator’s monogram
Condition: Excellent, no chips, cracks, or repairs
