Werner Engel was a painter and graphic artist from Thun in the Canton of Bern, Switzerland.

He traveled extensively early in his life, but artistically his greatest inspiration was his native town and the surrounding landscape including the historic beauty of Thun’s old town and famous castle (Schloss Thun).

Engel’s initial training was as a photographer, but he turned to painting beginning in 1902. In his work as a painter he was influenced by Hodler and by Cezanne.

He is listed in all major art directories, including the Benezit and the Vollmer.
