La Mano Poderosa – Hand of God – Small Retablo Religious Painting (SOLD)
Ex Voto painting on Wood circa 1840.
The All-Powerful Hand symbolizes the wounded hand of the crucified Christ. On the fingertips are representations of the Holy Family. We do not know the origin of this wonderful small painting, which was purchased here in Switzerland, but the motif is typical of religious folk art in Mexico and Puerto Rico as well as other regions of Latin America.
Perched on the tips of the fingers, Christ appears at the center flanked by his parents Mary and Joseph, and his grandparents, Anna and Joachim. The symbol of the hand, deriving from the European cult of Saint Anne, also bears the wound of the stigmata in reference both to the Crucifixion and to the life of Saint Francis. Below the hand, the seven lambs drinking here from the chalice of Christ’s blood, derive from the Book of Revelations.
