William Müller was born in Berne, but raised in Geneva by his grandmother after his mother died in childbirth. He was a student of Ferdinand Hodler – whose influence marked him profoundly.
Rebecca was painted in March of 1918. The artist died of the Spanish flu in November of that same year.
