Theodor Baierl (born 8 November 1881, Munich–† 21 May 1932, Munich) was a German painter and fresco artist, recognized for his polished mastery of old-master techniques. He studied at the prestigious Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, under esteemed instructors such as Martin von Feuerstein, Carl von Marr, Hugo von Habermann, and Franz von Stuck.
An active member of the Munich Secession, Baierl’s oeuvre bridges traditional and modern currents. He had a pronounced affinity for the art of the late Middle Ages and Quattrocento, visible in works like Knight with Death, which pay homage to Dürer, and his many frescoes across Bavaria that are often mistaken for centuries‑old creations.
During the First World War, the decline in ecclesiastical commissions prompted a shift toward easel painting—allegorical, historical, and more aligned with contemporary trends such as Art Nouveau and Realism—though he never regained his earlier prominence, Baierl exhibited regularly at the Munich Glaspalast in the 1920s.
