Day of Judgement – Dramatic Large Russian Lubok Print
Russian popular devotional broadside (lubok): Skaz strashnago suda bozhia — “Tale of the Dread Judgment of God (the Last Judgment).” Woodcut with hand-coloring in red and green. Russia, dated by the censor line 18 October 1831. The composition follows standard Orthodox Last-Judgment iconography: Christ in Majesty with the Deësis, ranks of Apostles as judges, trumpeting angels, the weighing of souls, Paradise at left, and at right the River of Fire figured as a serpent carrying sinners toward Hell. The long side columns are didactic texts; the lower frieze is a grid of punishments for specific sins. Printed on thin rag paper; visible creasing and handling folds consistent with domestic display.
