Naive Folk Art Portrait of a Child with Flowers

Naive Folk Painting of a Child with Flowers – Central European, Early to Mid-20th Century

This charming small naive painting depicts a young girl standing among stylized red flowers, rendered in a simple and direct folk style. The child wears a loose blue smock, bright red shoes, and a small green Alpine-style hat decorated with a flower, giving the figure a gentle storybook character. Her round face and large, solemn eyes are painted with touching simplicity, while the two flowering stems rising on either side frame the composition in a decorative and almost symmetrical way.

The clothing and distinctive green hat suggest inspiration from traditional Alpine dress, making a southern German or Austrian origin plausible. The work is painted in a deliberately simple manner with flattened perspective and modest, earthy colors typical of naive or amateur folk painting from the mid-20th century.

A faint pencil inscription on the reverse appears to read “Frl. Rüpp” (“Miss Rüpp”), possibly identifying the child portrayed or the original recipient of the painting. Also sketched on the back of the wooden panel is a light pencil drawing of the animals from the Grimm fairy tale The Bremen Town Musicians—a donkey with a dog, cat, and rooster standing on its back—adding an unexpected and charming detail to the piece.

A sweet and unusual decorative painting that would suit cottage interiors, children’s rooms, or collections of European folk and naive art.
