Gianni Vasari – Swiss Winter Landscape Under Full Moon (SOLD)
This large-format woodblock print by Swiss artist Gianni Vasari (born in Biel in 1949) captures a hauntingly quiet winter night beneath a luminous full moon. Signed in pencil and dated 1976, it is number 20 from an edition of 45. The print is from the artists early black and white period when he held day jobs including as a cowherd and carpenter and worked as an artist at night. “Ich wollte mir erst die Grundlage erschaffen – als «Schwarzmaler» jegliche Farbigkeit mir verbieten,” (I first wanted to build a foundation for myself – as a ‘painter in black’, to forbid myself all use of color), the the artist writes on his website. This serene snowy chalet landscape, executed in an expressionist style, draws out a mood of of Alpine stillness through layered textures and tonal contrasts.
