Down the Rapids – 19C Print of Perilous River Crossing
Five figures struggle in a narrow wooden canoe, raft or riverboat as it plunges into violent rapids. One man stands at the stern steering with a long sweep oar; another braces at the bow to fend off jagged rocks. Three passengers sit amidships, gripping the sides as the vessel tilts sharply in the churning current. Their expressive faces are full of the fear and drama of the moment.
Dark rock formations and tall conifers frame the riverbank, while mist rises from the white water. The stipple technique creates a soft atmospheric sky that contrasts with the swirling force of the rapids below.
The engraving captures a quintessential Romantic theme: human courage tested against the overwhelming power of nature. A unique small graphic for anyone who loves white water rafting, canoeing, wilderness adventures.
