Arnulf Rainer was a leading Austrian contemporary artist best known for his expressive overpaintings and his role in postwar European abstraction. Active from the 1950s onward, he developed a highly personal visual language rooted in gesture, repetition, and psychological intensity, often working directly over existing images, photographs, or prints. His work explores themes of presence and erasure, control and instinct, and has been widely exhibited internationally, establishing him as one of the most influential figures in late 20th-century Austrian art.

TRRR is a mixed-media work executed in gouache on a printed work, reflecting the artist’s longstanding interest in the dialogue between underlying imagery and a gestural painterly intervention, a hallmark of his overpaintings.
