An atmospheric autumn landscape by Swiss painter Adolf Mathys, depicting a river winding through a broad valley enclosed by steep, wooded hills.
Mathys builds the composition around the bright blue course of the river, which leads from the foreground towards the distant cliffs. The surrounding woodland is painted in closely grouped passages of ochre, orange, violet and deep green, while the pale valley floor provides a quieter contrast. Broad brushwork, simplified forms and expressive colour give the landscape its distinctly modern character.
