Born in Lausanne in 1901, the Swiss artist Richard Hartmann studied at the Academie Loup and became a student of the Vaudois painter Charles Clément. Précédemment, il avait suivi des cours à l’Académie Loup. From 1964 to 1971, he taught drawing and painting at the l’École des Beaux-Arts et d’Art appliqué and exhibited widely in the francophone regions of Switzerland (Suisse Romande) including at the Galerie Paul Vallotton.
This oil on canvas by Richard Hartmann presents a carefully composed still life featuring grapes and peaches arranged in a quiet, naturalistic setting. The soft light and restrained palette emphasize form and texture, with particular attention to the gentle sheen of the fruit and the way light settles across the surface.
This work reflects a classical approach to still life, grounded in the European realist tradition. The composition recalls the influence of 19th-century academic painting and earlier Dutch still life works, where everyday subjects were rendered with clarity and control.
The painting’s focus on seasonal fruit suggests a reflection on ripeness, domestic abundance, and the fleeting nature of time. Its simplicity and balance make it a contemplative piece, suited to interiors where quiet detail and tradition are valued. Well suited to a kitchen or dining room interior.
