The Swiss artist Béatus (Beat) Zumstein was born in Bern on August 2, 1927.  Like many artists of his generation, he studied at School of Applied Arts in Bern,  soon afterwards moved to Paris.  He worked in solitude, following his own path and absorbing a variety of influences ranging from Expressionism to neo-cubism, tachisme and geometric abstraction.  His woodblock engravings made in the 1950s show the influence of Gauguin and Edvard Munch.
