Figures in a Landscape – 1945 Ink Sketch by Ernst Georg Heussler

Striking preparatory sketch for a wall mural.  Ink wash on very thin Japan paper.  An artist sits on a log sketching his friend as a woman looks on.  Behind them a horse with a plough harness on, and in the background a figure working the fields.

Ernst Georg Heussler

1903 Basel – 1982 Zurich

The versatile Swiss artist Ernst Georg Heussler worked in many media – engravings and woodcuts, oil and watercolor, and large scale murals including in Tel-Aviv and in Basel. He was married to the artist Hey Heussler.

Studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule (School of Applied Arts) in Basel from 1917 to 1920 and later at the  Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris (1932).
The artist traveled widely in Italy, Southern France, Spain and England, and later in Morocco and Algeria.   He was in military service forfrom 1940 to 1945.
