Charles Antoine Coypel – Follies of Youth and Old Age

Two 18th century copperplate engravings after works by Charles Antoine Coypel engraved and published by Renée Elizabeth Marlie Lépicié and Louis Surugue, France, 1745.  Both are attracively framed and matted with plates bearing the name “Ch. Copyel.”

The first image, entitled “La Jeunesse sous les Habillemens de La Décrépitude” (Youth in the Clothing of Old Age)  shows a young woman sitting hunched over with a cane in clothing more typically worn by and older woman.

The second image, “Age adorned by folly with the clothes of youth” (La Folie pare la Décrépitude des ajustemens de la Jeunesse) shows an older woman dressing in a fashionable younger woman’s clothing.

Examples of these prints can be found in in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
