An atmospheric river landscape and fishing scene depicting a solitary fisherman on the bank beside a moored houseboat. Broad, animated brushwork and reflections across the water give the painting an Impressionist character, while the subdued treatment of the riverside buildings and vegetation creates a quiet, slightly misty atmosphere.

Little biographical information about Louis-Clément Aubertin appears to have been published. He is nevertheless documented as an exhibiting artist in Paris: Aubertin participated in the 40th Salon des Indépendants, held at the Grand Palais from 18 January to 28 February 1929. The exhibition, presided over by Paul Signac, included more than 4,600 works. His participation confirms that he was an active professional or serious exhibiting artist in France by the late 1920s.
