About the Artist

Gerhard Marcks was a central figure in 20th-century German art, known for his sculptural work as well as his woodcuts and drawings. A founding member of the Bauhaus, he taught at the school’s early ceramics workshop and maintained a lifelong dedication to expressive, figurative work rooted in classical tradition. His work was deemed “degenerate” by the Nazis, but post-war he was honored as one of Germany’s great modern artists. He is celebrated for his synthesis of form and movement, often focusing on human and animal figures rendered with a timeless clarity.
