Female Nudes – Small Format Drawings by Swiss Artist Huguenin-Dumittan
A group of six small-format figure drawings by the Swiss sculptor and draughtsman André Huguenin-Dumittan. The drawings depict female nudes in a variety of seated and standing poses, sometimes accompanied by lightly indicated objects or background figures. Economically drawn and informal in character, they appear to have been made as independent figure studies rather than as highly finished exhibition works.
Huguenin-Dumittan trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and later worked from a studio in his native La Chaux-de-Fonds. Although principally known as a sculptor, he also produced drawings and medals. His interest in the human figure is represented in a number of public sculptures in La Chaux-de-Fonds, including Maternité, La Baigneuse, La Liseuse and L’Étude.

1888 – La Chaux-de-Fonds (NE) – 1975
André Huguenin-Dumittan was a Swiss sculptor, draughtsman and medallist. Born in La Chaux-de-Fonds on 1 July 1888, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris before returning to his native city, where he maintained a studio in the Parc Gallet. He is particularly known for figurative sculpture, including portraits, female figures and representations of mothers and children.
Several of his sculptures and reliefs remain on public display in La Chaux-de-Fonds. These include Maternité, commissioned by the city in 1933 and inaugurated in 1934; La Baigneuse in the Parc Gallet; L’Étude at the entrance to the Bibliothèque de la Ville; and La Liseuse on the façade of rue Léopold-Robert 39. His work also encompassed drawings and medals. The Fondation Huguenin-Dumittan was established to preserve his memory, promote knowledge of his work and support an art prize bearing his name.
