Turin, Torino, Chiesa del Corpus Domini – Joan Blaeu

Torino, Chiesa del Corpus Domini

“SACRA AEDIS – CHRISTI CORPORI DICATAE PROSPECTUS INTER.

– Copperplate Engraving

We believe this is a sheet from Haeredes Ioannis Blaeu’s 1682 Theatrum Sabaudiae (The Theater of Magnificence).

The Church of Corpus Domini (Chiesa del Corpus Domini ) was built in 1610 in Turin is dedicated to a miracle which took place during the sack of the city in 1453. A soldier was trying to steal the ostensorium containing the Blessed Sacrament, but the ostensorium fell to the ground, while the Host remained suspended in air.  The church is the work of Ascanio Vittozzi.

The center crease of this engraving is original to the piece, since it was printed on two sheets and bound together.

Dimensions:  65 x 58 cm (full sheet including margins)
