The Woman in the Mirror – La Maitresse du Titien – 19th Century Engraving

Elegant circa 1830 engraving by French engraver François Forster after the painting known as “La Femme au Miroir” (The Woman in the Mirror) by Titian which is in the collection of the Louvre.  There have been various theories over the year about whether the painting was an allegory or represented real personages.  At the time this engraving was created, the work was was widely believed to show Titian’s mistress.  Printed in Manheim Germany by Artaria & Fontaine.

Inscription ‘Le Titien pinxt’ – ‘Forster del & sc’; ‘LA MAITRESSE DU TITIEN’; ‘imprimée par Ramboz; ‘Ecrit par Piquet Jeune’; lettered with a dedication to Prince Wagram and publisher’s address: ‘A Manheim chez Artaria & Fontaine’
A copy of this engraving is part of the collection of the British Museum.
